Ocean, River, Lake or Beach: Find Your Perfect Oregon Coast Fishing Adventure

If you love to fish, or simply want to try your hand at catching dinner on the Oregon Coast, Florence is an exceptional place to cast a line.

Located just four miles upstream from where the Siuslaw River meets the Pacific Ocean, Florence offers an impressive variety of fishing experiences within a relatively small area. You can fish a coastal river for salmon and steelhead, cast from the shore of a peaceful forest lake, hunt for surf perch from an ocean beach, or head offshore for a deep-sea adventure.

And when you're ready to put the rod down, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy Florence, from exploring the Oregon Dunes and golfing to sandboarding, ATV adventures, hiking, dining, and exploring the shops and galleries of Historic Old Town.

Whether you're an experienced angler or a family looking for a new outdoor adventure, fishing in Florence puts you remarkably close to some of Oregon's most diverse fisheries.

Fish the Siuslaw River for Salmon and Steelhead

The Siuslaw River winds through Florence before flowing into the Pacific, creating excellent opportunities for anglers pursuing salmon and steelhead.

Depending on the season and current regulations, anglers may encounter Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, and other native species.

There's nothing quite like feeling a powerful salmon take your line and realizing you're about to experience one of Oregon's classic fishing adventures.

The river also offers a variety of settings, from accessible areas near Florence to quieter stretches farther upstream. Before heading out, always check current regulations, seasonal closures and fishing reports.

Explore Florence's Many Fishing Lakes

Prefer calmer water and a more relaxed fishing experience?

You're in luck.

There are roughly two dozen lakes within about 12 miles of Florence, providing an extraordinary variety of freshwater fishing opportunities.

Among the area's best-known lakes are:

  • Cleawox Lake
  • Siltcoos Lake
  • Woahink Lake
  • Tahkenitch Lake

Depending on the lake, season, and conditions, anglers can pursue rainbow and cutthroat trout, largemouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, and crappie.

Fish from shore, a dock, kayak, or boat and enjoy the peaceful scenery of forested coastal lakes. The combination of clear water, towering evergreens, and fresh Pacific air makes lake fishing around Florence as much about the experience as the catch.

Tips for Lake Fishing

Local fishers some practical advice for anglers fishing Florence-area lakes.

Trout: In stocked lakes such as Cleawox Lake, PowerBait can be highly effective when still-fishing for rainbow trout. If trout are feeding near the surface, try half a nightcrawler beneath a bobber.

Bass: For largemouth bass, try soft-plastic lures that imitate small fish or crayfish. Crankbaits, jigs and spinnerbaits can also be productive, particularly during the spring spawning period.

Panfish: Worms are a reliable choice for bluegill, perch and other panfish. Try a small worm beneath a bobber for bluegill. For crappie, small jigs tipped with worm or a Crappie Nibble can be effective.

Boat vs. shore: Fishing from docks and shorelines can produce good results, but a boat can give you access to more productive areas of larger lakes.

For salmon, locals recommend trolling with cut herring or lures scented with herring when conditions and regulations allow.

Always check current Oregon fishing regulations and local fishing reports before heading out.

Cast for Surf Perch from the Beach

There's another Florence fishery that doesn't always get the attention it deserves: surf perch fishing from the beach.

According to Jesse Dolin, an avid fisherman and destination management steward for the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, Florence offers excellent access to surf perch along the beach south of the Siuslaw River's South Jetty.

Look for deeper water close to shore, particularly areas revealed by waves that break farther offshore.

Dolin says surf-perch fishing can be exciting when you find a school—but if the fish aren't biting, don't be afraid to move.

If you're using an ATV or side-by-side, portions of the beach where OHV travel is permitted can make it easier to cover more ground and find productive water. Be sure to follow all posted OHV rules and designated access areas.

A Simple Surf Perch Rig

Dolin recommends a straightforward setup:

  • A 2-ounce pyramid weight
  • Two pre-leadered No. 10 hooks
  • Shrimp or other appropriate bait
  • A long cast into the surf

Cast beyond the breaking waves, then move along the beach until you locate the fish.

As always, check current regulations, access restrictions and marine regulations before fishing.

Head Offshore for Deep-Sea Fishing

Want to take your fishing adventure to the next level?

Florence is also an excellent base for Pacific Ocean charter fishing.

Head south to nearby Winchester Bay or Reedsport, where charter boats take anglers offshore in pursuit of species such as salmon and albacore tuna, depending on the season and regulations.

There is something unforgettable about heading out onto the Pacific, watching the Oregon Coast disappear behind you and then feeling a powerful fish hit your line.

For many visitors, an offshore charter becomes one of the highlights of their entire Oregon Coast trip.

When Is the Best Time to Fish?

One of the advantages of fishing around Florence is the variety of fisheries available throughout the year.

The best time depends on what you want to catch and where you want to fish.

  • Salmon and steelhead: Seasonal opportunities on the Siuslaw River and other area waters
  • Trout: Particularly popular in stocked lakes
  • Bass: Often productive during warmer months, especially spring
  • Panfish: Available in several area lakes
  • Surf perch: Available from the beach when conditions are favorable
  • Ocean fishing: Seasonal opportunities for salmon, albacore, and other species

Because seasons, bag limits, closures and bait restrictions can change, always check the current Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations before you fish.

What to Bring Fishing in Florence

Your gear will depend on the type of fishing you're planning, but a few essentials are worth remembering:

  • Oregon fishing license and appropriate tags
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Waterproof outerwear
  • Good footwear
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Fishing tackle appropriate for your target species
  • Bait or lures
  • Cooler with ice
  • Plenty of water and snacks

And remember the Oregon Coast rule:

There is no bad weather only poor clothing choices.

Conditions can change quickly, particularly on the beach and ocean, so dress in layers and be prepared for wind, rain, and changing temperatures.

Cleaning and Preparing Your Catch

If you're fortunate enough to bring home a fish, the next question is: What are you going to do with it?

Fresh Oregon Coast fish can make an outstanding meal, but proper handling begins immediately after the catch.

Keep It Cold

If you're keeping fish, get it on ice as quickly as possible. Keeping the fish properly chilled helps preserve quality and food safety.

Clean It Carefully

For fish you're preparing whole, a basic cleaning process includes:

  1. Rinse the fish with cold water.
  2. Remove the scales if appropriate for the species.
  3. Remove the fins if desired.
  4. Make a careful incision along the belly.
  5. Remove the internal organs.
  6. Remove the kidney/bloodline along the backbone.
  7. Rinse the cavity thoroughly.
  8. Fillet or prepare the fish according to your recipe.

A sharp fillet knife makes the job much easier. Take care when handling the fish and your knife, and keep your work surface clean.

For more specialized cleaning or preparation instructions, consult a trusted fisheries or food-safety source appropriate to the species you've caught.
