Frequent Paddling Results in Fun, Discipline, and Great Reward

Kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing in Florence, Oregon, are dynamic, family-friendly activities that thrive in an area overflowing with natural beauty. Known as Oregon’s Coastal Playground, Florence offers countless opportunities for paddlers of all types and skill levels to enjoy the water.

With nearly two dozen lakes within roughly two dozen miles, the Siuslaw River, and numerous estuaries, creeks, and streams nestled in the Siuslaw National Forest, outdoor adventures abound. Paddlers can even explore portions of the stunning Oregon Dunes by kayak, making Florence a true haven for water enthusiasts.

From spotting wildlife to exploring hidden coves and arms of the area’s lakes, paddlers are treated to an ever-changing landscape and the freshest air imaginable, straight off the Pacific Ocean. But paddling isn’t just about squeezing into a kayak and sliding into the water. Beginners and seasoned paddlers alike often ask: Where should we go? What gear do we need? How do we plan for the weather?

Getting Connected with Local Kayakers, Paddleboarders, and Canoeists Around Florence, Oregon

To answer these questions, we turned to FOAK (Florence Oregon Area Kayakers), a passionate local group of various paddlers. Among the most informed locals is Patti Godwin, one of the founders and leaders of FOAK. Godwin speaks passionately about the sport and about “being on the water,” as well as of the group’s intention of introducing others to the pastime.

Godwin is a wealth of knowledge. Her enthusiasm for the sport is matched only by the group’s commitment to safety and community. FOAK hosts pop-up paddles during the summer, inviting paddlers of all levels to join in exploring Florence’s waterways.

"Our goal is to teach safety and technique while fostering a welcoming community," says Godwin. FOAK events emphasize safety, responsibility, friendship, personal flotation devices (life jackets, etc.) and other useful information on proper apparel for weather and mobility, paddling on windy days, understanding and negotiating tidal changes on rivers, and where to find the public restrooms and great restaurants for after-paddle lunches. She says after a morning on the water, paddlers can enjoy the charm of Historic Old Town Florence, filled with unique shops, galleries, and delightful eateries.

“Old Town is full of great food and drink; and shops, galleries, and pocket parks where you can experience the local charm and stretch your legs after a morning or afternoon on the water.

Events and Resources for Paddlers Around Florence

FOAK’s annual PlayShop is a must-attend event for paddlers of all experience levels. Scheduled for May 2, 2025 (or May 3 if weather requires), at Darlings Marina and RV Resort on Siltcoos Lake, the Siuslaw PlayShop, sponsored by Siuslaw Vision, offers safety demonstrations, expert advice, and opportunities to try out gear provided by Oregon Paddle Sports from Eugene.

The group also hosts community paddles called raft-ups from May to July to help introduce people to the sport.

“Our summer raft-up events are great for beginners and those who want to broaden or deepen their experience,” explained Godwin. “These events often feature information and new launch locations.”

“And, we’re back at the very friendly Darlings Resort for their big annual July 4 celebration (July 5 in 2025), said Godwin.

Don’t Miss FOAK’s Signature Events

“As a group, we’ve done these trips and other events for more than four years. Our Facebook group has 1500 members with about half being local and half from around Oregon or beyond so be sure to ask to join us, then post questions or comments and ‘love and follow’ us. We sometimes travel beyond the Florence area for paddles and meet-ups with other groups,” she added. “Throughout the year we’ll visit very popular places and some rather remote places too.”

One of FOAK’s most anticipated traditions draws paddlers from around the Pacific Northwest is the group’s “10 Days on 10 Waters” event—10 consecutive days in September on a variety of waters—beginning north of Florence in the Yachats area and exploring different lakes, and rivers as far south as Eel Lake and Ten Mile Lake. Participants can choose some or all 10 daily experiences tailoring the event to each participant’s time and skill level.

Explore Florence’s Diverse Waterways

Florence’s waterways offer something for everyone:

  • Cleawox Lake: Ideal for beginners, this lake in Jesse M. Honeyman State Park features the “Eye of the Needle” monument as a landmark for paddlers and a springtime bloom of fragrant lily pads in the Long Arm area.

  • Munsel Lake: Known for its seasonal waterlilies and intriguing coves, this lake is a favorite among families.

  • Woahink, Siltcoos, and Tahkenitch Lakes provide easy access and countless scenic locations with miles of unblemished shoreline and wildlife viewing opportunities.

  • Siuslaw River: For intermediate paddlers, the river provides stunning views, but watch for tidal impacts and respect the local fishermen during their seasons. Launch points include the Port of Siuslaw in Historic Old Town Florence or Tiernan Landing, 9.5 miles east of town on Highway 126.

  • North Fork Siuslaw River: Experienced paddlers will enjoy Bender Landing, just three miles up North Fork Road along that branch of the Siuslaw River.

Godwin also points paddlers to two local outfitters for rentals: at Cleawox Lake in Jesse M. Honeyman State Park (seasonal) and Siltcoos Kayak Rentals in Westlake, Oregon—about six miles south of Florence next to Dunes City.  Siltcoos Kayak Rentals’ website says: “We are located at the start of the famous Siltcoos River Canoe Trail. We rent kayaks by the day. Come and enjoy the easy, picturesque 3-mile paddle to the Pacific Ocean or around Siltcoos Lake. Old growth Sitka Spruce and temperate rain forest surround this location in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.” Neither allow rentals to be taken to other locations.

Pro Tips from Patti Godwin

Godwin’s advice for a great day on the water? "The best paddling days are when the combined air and water temperature exceeds 120 degrees. And visit as many new waters as possible—every location has its own delights." Her favorite? “Whichever water I’m on at the moment. Each is different every day.”

So, whether you’re new to paddling or a seasoned kayaker, Florence invites you to experience the thrill and serenity of its pristine waterways and make your paddling adventures unforgettable.
