How to Explore the Oregon Coast This Spring—Like a Local
Spring is a beautiful time to visit Florence, Oregon. The wildflowers are blooming, the trails are drying out, and the coastline is alive with wildlife—from seal pups on the beaches to snowy plovers nesting in the sand. As more visitors head to the Central Oregon Coast to enjoy the season, it’s also a crucial time to protect the natural beauty that makes this place so special.
This spring, we’re encouraging everyone to “Coast Like a Local.” That means enjoying our beaches and trails while helping protect the wildlife and habitats that call this area home.
Explore the Coast Responsibly: Key Tips for Spring Visitors
1. Give Wildlife Space—At Least 50 Yards
Seals, sea lions, and other marine animals are part of what makes the Florence coast magical. But they need space to stay safe and stress-free. Keep your distance—at least 50 yards—and don’t let pets approach them either. Watching from afar is safer for everyone.
2. Protect Nesting Snowy Plovers
Spring is nesting season for snowy plovers, a threatened shorebird species found on Oregon beaches. Stay below the high tide line and avoid marked nesting areas. These zones are closed to dogs, bikes, drones, and kites during nesting season, typically March through September.
3. Leash Dogs and Keep Them Away from Wildlife
Even the most playful dog can disturb birds or young animals. Chasing shorebirds causes stress and drains energy they need to survive. Keep pets leashed and steer them away from wildlife, especially seals and birds resting on the beach.
4. Leave No Trace
Spring winds can scatter litter quickly. Be sure to pack out all trash and food scraps to protect both land and sea animals. Leaving no trace is one of the easiest ways to protect our coastal environment.
5. Be a Steward of the Coast
When you respect beach rules, stay on marked trails, and give wildlife space, you’re helping preserve the Oregon Coast’s natural beauty. Responsible travel isn’t just about safety—it’s about keeping this place wild and welcoming for future visitors and native species alike.
Help Others Coast Like a Local
We’ve launched a spring awareness campaign to share these tips far and wide. If you live in or love Florence, help spread the word about coastal stewardship and wildlife safety. Every visitor who “coasts like a local” helps protect what makes this place unforgettable.
