The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce major strides in making Florence, Oregon — known as Oregon’s Coastal Playground — more accessible to visitors of all abilities. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Wheel the World, David’s Chair, and investments in infrastructure such as Mobi-Mats, Florence is setting a new standard for inclusive travel on the Oregon Coast.
Partnering with Wheel the World for Inclusive Tourism
In 2023, the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce was awarded a $30,500 grant from Travel Oregon to collaborate with Wheel the World, a global platform focused on accessible travel experiences. This partnership includes:
-
Assessing local tourism businesses for accessibility
-
Providing specialized training to tourism partners
-
Listing inclusive accommodations and activities on WheeltheWorld.com
This project connects travelers with mobility challenges to welcoming, barrier-free experiences throughout Florence.
Expanding Beach Access with Mobi-Mats
Florence has taken a major step in beach accessibility by installing Mobi-Mats at Heceta Beach Park, located next to Driftwood Shores Resort and Conference Center. These durable, non-slip mats create a stable pathway across the sand, allowing those using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers to reach the shoreline with greater ease.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Oregon Coast Visitors Association to enhance travelability across coastal communities.
Empowering Outdoor Adventures with David’s Chair
Florence is proud to host a David’s Chair location at Driftwood Shores. Visitors can reserve free access to electric all-terrain track chairs, enabling greater independence when navigating sandy beaches and rugged coastal trails.

Infrastructure Upgrades Along Highway 101
As part of the ongoing Highway 101 corridor refresh, the City of Florence has improved pedestrian infrastructure, including:
-
Installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps
-
Addition of well-marked crosswalks with user-activated signals
These upgrades improve safety and convenience for all pedestrians and demonstrate Florence’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
Improving Audio Access with Hearing Loops
Accessibility in Florence also includes enhanced audio support.
A hearing loop is an audio device attached to a loop of copper wire — forming a magnetic field. Individuals with a telecoil or cochlear implant standing within this field or ‘loop’ can switch to their T-coil setting, allowing any connected audio to sound crystal clear. Hearing loops provide improved clarity in large crowds and reduce background noise, making it easier for people with hearing loss to understand conversations.
Currently, hearing loops are available at several locations:
-
Florence Visitors Center and Art Gallery
-
Driftwood Shores Hotel and Resort
-
City Lights Cinemas
-
Florence Events Center
More venues are anticipated to come online soon, expanding Florence’s commitment to inclusive visitor experiences.
Experience the Inclusive Spirit of Florence
Florence invites travelers of all abilities to experience its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and welcoming community. Whether you're exploring sandy beaches, scenic trails, or charming Old Town Florence, accessibility is now woven into the very fabric of the experience.
