Wednesdays at Cape Perpetua Visitor Center May 29 - August 28 Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve Education 11:00am-3:00pm Tara DuBois, Communications Coordinator for the Cape Perpetua Collaborative, will be on hand to answer questions and share information and resources on the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve, Oregon’s biggest marine reserve. Marine Reserve Guided Hike – Captain Cook Trail 3:00pm Take a stroll on the Captain Cook’s Trail with Tara DuBois, where she will explore with visitors how the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve allows a vast web of interconnected species to thrive and survive. Oregon doesn’t stop at the beach, so let’s take a deeper dive into our local marine reserve.

How are salmon limits determined?

Join the Siuslaw Watershed Council at the Siuslaw Public Library for a presentation about ocean and river ecosystem indicators of salmon returns and how folks use those indicators to determine salmon fishing limits on the coast, set by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. John Spangler, District Fish Biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) will bring his 26 years of experience in the Northwest Oregon district, to inform us about salmon spawning survey data collection, population estimates, forecasts and regulation development for Coho and Chinook salmon on the coast. Laurie Weitkamp; Research Fisheries Biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will inform us about ocean conditions and survival of salmon while they're in the ocean. Since 2014, ocean temperatures across the much of Northeast Pacific have been above average. Warm temperatures that started with the “Blob” and the strong 2015/2016 El Niño have persisted across…

Cape Cove Beach: Marine Debris Monitoring on the Oregon Coast

Join us on the beach for a marine debris cleanup at Cape Cove Beach. This project is great for anyone who would like to give 1-2 hours of their time, contribute to science and clean up beaches touching Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and Protected Areas. Please meet at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center and walk down to the beach from there. The path is mostly paved, but the gravel trail to beach access includes stairs. Sturdy shoes are recommended. We will survey 100 yards of Cape Cove Beach. This includes flat sandy beach, wood debris, cobble rocks and lava rock. Most of the debris we find is located in the rocky and woody areas. After the survey, we will collect our finds, sort and document. The plastic items are kept for re-use in various projects. Poker Walk During Rods ‘n Rhodies Invitational Car Show!

This year the Poker Walk will be on Saturday, September 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with some great prizes! Local shops, galleries, and restaurants in Old Town are your poker destination. On the day of the event, Poker Walk contestants purchase a Rods ’N Rhodies Poker Walk Card for $5 from the Rods ’N Rhodies Pit Crew at the Poker Walk table on Bay Street. The contestants then visit each registered destination and draw a card from the deck of cards. The merchant signs off on the card and records it for the officials. Contestants must have at least five cards to have a playing hand. The more merchants a player visits, the better the chances for a winning hand when they turn it in at the Poker Walk table on Bay Street. SOLVE’s largest event of the year, the Fall Beach & Riverside Cleanup, in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, is on Saturday, September 21st, 2019, in conjunction with National Public Land’s Day and International Coastal Cleanup Day. Join any of the dozens of coastal cleanup projects that are picking up marine debris and litter before it ends up back in the ocean. All events are free, open to the public and family friendly.
