Siuslaw Salmon Spawning Tour

November 17, 2018 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The McKenzie River Trust is partnering with Siuslaw Watershed Council and the BLM for a special salmon spawning tour at Whittaker Creek. This informative tour, led by a salmon expert with the BLM, will get an up close and personal view of these incredible fish at the end of their journey upstream. Participants will learn about the habitat requirements for the fall Chinook salmon and different conservation issues affecting their success while viewing spawning activity. Following the viewing, participants are invited to take a hike to the old growth forest.

Space is limited and registration is required:  http://www.mckenzieriver.org/events/list/salmon-spawning-tour-whittaker-creek/

Whittaker Creek is part of the Siuslaw River watershed that drains water from the Coast Range to the Pacific Ocean. The creek is a designated watchable wildlife site because it provides habitat of vital importance to anadromous fish species which include coho and chinook salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout and other fish species. Chinook and coho salmon, as well as steelhead trout can be observed in the fall and winter months spawning in the creek next to the campground.
