Herr & Hofmann Art Exhibition
November 14, 2019 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
An art show and public reception showcasing the original works of two talented artists will be presented in Gallery Five on Thursday, November 14, from 5-7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center.
Award-winning artist Bernie Herr is well known to the Oregon coast art community, having been a driving force with wife Lu in the creation of a vibrant showcase for local artists at the FEC. When the FEC first opened, its emphasis was theater arts. Bernie and his wife Lu, along with other visual artists, represented a vocal force to create Gallery One and later Gallery Five. Many wonderful art shows have resulted from their efforts artists.
Bernie began painting in oils with a realistic edge, evolving over the years to a preference of aqueous media. He worked in or combined watercolor, gouache, inks or acrylics to create a truly unique body of abstract and eclectic work, which is rich in color, vibrant, and diverse in subject matter. Over the years, Bernie received many awards for his art. Among the venues are Celebrate Arts, Emerald Art Center and the Watercolor Society of Oregon where he won six awards and achieved gold levels. His work is in private collections in more than a dozen states, including Hawaii, and also in Canada, Japan, Poland, and Israel.
Having lived in Florence since 1984, Bernie and Lu recently moved from their home and studio in Greentrees to a retirement center in Eugene, leaving behind a large collection of framed original artwork, greeting cards, and ceramic tiles featuring his iconic images. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of his works will be donated to the Friends of the FEC “Fresh Impressions” Youth Art program.
Also showing are the original oil paintings of the late Wolfgang Emil Hofmann. Born in Dresden, Germany, Mr. Hofmann served in the U.S. Army before eventually retiring in Florence with his wife of 60 years, Dora. They were 20 year residents of Florentine Estates. A skilled landscape painter, Mr. Hofmann was entirely self taught and drew great inspiration from nature and coastal ranges. The body of work being displayed showcases his passion for capturing images of natural wonders in his art and reflects a life-long love of gardening and being in the great outdoors.
