Florence Rods 'n' Rhodies

Merchants of Old Town (MOOT) is organizing a car show for Florence, which will be called “Florence Rods ‘n Rhodies” and will take place on September 12, 13, and 14, 2008. We are anticipating at least 150 cars for this year’s show. Some have already secured lodging for that weekend.
This event will be an invitational for all classes of 1972 model cars and older. There will be a $25 entry fee for each car. The show will start on Friday, September 12, 2008, with registration and a poker run. Saturday, September 13, will be the main show. The car show will be continued on Sunday, September 14th, with the trophies being awarded at 2:00 p.m.
We are seeking permission to close off Bay Street to display the cars – foot traffic only will be permitted from midnight September 13th until Sunday 3:00 p.m., September 14th.
Saturday will be a day of viewing the cars and talking to the owners, and will also include a street dance at 7:00 p.m. on Bay Street, a cruise through Old Town at 5:30 p.m., and selection of winners for the many trophies that will be given away on Sunday.
In conjunction with the invitational car show, we are having public market on Sunday, with a separate showing of Florence hot rods of the Rhody Cruisers.
Trophies will be sponsored by local businesses and have a theme that represents their business. Examples are: Edwin K Bed & Breakfast – The Best (Pickup) Bed; Firehouse Restaurant – The Best Flames; Beachcomber – The Best Woody; and Hot Rod Grill – The Best Rod and so on. If you have an idea for a trophy or would like to be a sponsor, let us know.
It takes many hours of planning and several thousands of dollars to make an event like this a success. We need many volunteers and we will be contacting local businesses for financial sponsorship. We want this to be an annual Florence event that will bring spectators and car enthusiasts into our town for a weekend in September each year.
