Q: Are digital hearing aids really that much better than analog?
A: YES. Here's why: An analog aid is nothing more than an amplification device while the digital aid can actually manipulate audio sources in many ways that are undectable by the person receiving the adjusted sounds. Digital offers a much higher sound quality; it is robust, flexible, and affordable.
Q: How does digital manipulate sounds?
A: Digital aids manipulate sound using some of the same technology in your home stereo. Different circuits inside both have specific jobs. For example, one circuit will increase the treble (high pitchs) while another completely terminates all sound below a certain low pitch frequency (bass).
Q: What are some of the digital enhancements available on modern hearing aids?
A: Here are some of the many features available on different makes and models of digital hearing aids: noise reduction, feedback reduction, sound generation, speech enhancement, directional microphone, compression, data logging, automatic gain control, loud sound protection and the use of a telecoil for automatic telephone response. You can learn about each of these terms by visiting the "Glossary of Terms."
Q: Should I purchase one hearing aid, or two?
A: Each individual has their own set of prioritys and goals for restoring their hearing. One can generally decide after answering a couple questions. For example: do you have hearing loss in both ears? And, if so, are you frequently in environments that require improved hearing from both sides, like meetings or group discussions.
Q: Will I regain ALL of my hearing
A: Yes and No depending on what caused the hearing loss. But at the very least, you will hear sounds you haven't heard in a long time.
Q: What are the basic styles or models?
A: The four most common styles of hearing aids on the market today are: BTE - Behind the Ear; CIC - Completely in Canal; ITE - In the Ear; ITC - In the Canal.
Q: Do all the styles perform the same?
A: No. Each style is better suited for different hearing problems and for individuals. Nor does each style have the same exact circuitry or parts. Many different lines are unique with advanced proprietory developments.
